     The term ‘Bullwhip’ is a specifically designed single tail whip that has a fall and optional crackers or poppers.  The Bullwhip is legendary with the old west of America and buckaroos in Australia.  Introduced to the United States by Spanish Vaqueros, the Bullwhip was the tool of the original cowboy.

     SAFETY is a serious production when it comes to being a whipster.  Once you become accomplished, the safety issue should be well and truly embedded within the heart of the whip itself as well as your mind. Being safety conscious must include having sufficient area in which to manoeuvre your whip.

     Before you start any exercise in this procedure, especially if you are a novice, be sure to wear safety glasses and cover exposed parts of your body, i.e. wear long sleeves, long pants, and gloves.  You might even consider covering your head.
•    The forward crack is probably the first crack a person should learn with the whip.  This crack is reasonably safe, this is the one you would use for cutting targets.

     FALL HITCH – is where the fall is attached to the end of the thong.  If the braiding above the fall hitch becomes faulty, such as loose strands, your whip will not crack as well, if at all and if the strands are weak there is more chance of them breaking in this area.

There are several different sections to a bullwhip and each needs maintenance periodically, some sections more than others do.  Here is a list and brief description of each section.
•    Thong
•    Handle /Butt knot
•    Handle
•    Wrist Loop
•    Fall Hitch
•    Fall
•    Popper or Cracker
•    Ring transition knot

     As for crackers, the right size cracker is important, despite what some people believe, that larger crackers make louder noises, it isn’t true, they just break down faster and will eventually cause damage to your whip. 

     Those that are experienced know what a cracker or popper is, Australian cracker, United States popper, for those that are not sure yet the cracker or popper is what makes the loud boom at the end of the whip.  They call it a “sonic boom”.  We will call it a cracker in this article.  There are times when when replacement of the cracker will be necessary.  They are not a necessity but without a cracker, the fall quickly wears down. 

     Proper use of the Bullwhip is surely an art and a technique.  As sure as the compass points north so the whip points where the thumb dictates.  With the thumb nicely lined up with the handle, so your whip obeys.  There are several steps to using the bullwhip correctly and successfully, you should be in an area where no obstacles hinder the procedure.  The whip must have a clear path to execute its movement.  You need to consider a couple of things
•    How long is the whip?  Times two

     As with all tools, there is a care and maintenance procedure if you want your tools to last and do you proud, and as with any sports equipment to retain its worth, kept in good condition, it has to be maintained in order to work to your satisfaction and for the betterment of your sport.  The same applies with whips, a good quality leather whip is very sensitive to environmental conditions.
